| Since 1851, North Carolina has been hit by 47 hurricanes, 12 of them being major hurricanes (category 3 or above). North Carolina has never experienced a category 5 hurricane. On average, this means that North Carolina experiences a hurricane every 3.3 years. |
| With such a cataclysmic event potentially threatening our shores so frequently, insurance companies take special notice. They are careful about who and when they issue boat insurance policies. Do not expect to get an insurance policy when a hurricane is predicted to come close to the US mainland. Most insurers will suspend new policy issuance when a storm becomes named until the threat has passed. |
| Boat Owners too need to take special precautions for hurricanes. Just because you have insurance, don't take the attitude that the "insurance company will pay for it". If you own a boat and don't take any action to help prevent a loss, you may be covered for your loss, however, when you go to seek insurance on your new vessel you might have problems. |
| Boat Owners should pull their vessel out of the water to dry storage or to other protected areas well above the flood line. In addition, take valuable items like electronics and store them inside your home. Secure any loose items that might be able to fly and damage your boat or others in high winds. If your boat is too large to pull out, make sure that you have multiple sets of lines to secure the boat. For larger boats, many boat owners elect to anchor their boats away from the marina to avoid flying debris and potential damage from the vessels around them. |
